Testing a Vehicle Battery

You won't get far without a working battery; in fact, you won't even move an inch if your battery doesn't have enough juice. In order to assess the condition of your battery, you'll need to use a tool called a voltmeter. At Savage Kia, we recommend using a digital one to make results easy to read.

Before you do anything, turn off the ignition and make sure all vehicle lights are off. Connect the positive test lead to the battery's positive terminal, and then connect the negative test lead to the battery's negative terminal. Your voltmeter should give you a reading at this point. Anything above 12.4 volts is considered acceptable. When you're finished, be sure to remove the negative terminal first.

A general rule of thumb is that batteries less than four years old should be in good, working order. If you need any assistance, we're always here to help.
